To combat indoor boredom on a very rainy day, we created our own paper plate umbrellas. Our supplies were simple: a white paper plate, blue construction paper, craft stick, scissors, tape, glue, and whatever you want to use to decorate (we used crayons and watercolor paint).
For decorating the umbrella of course we had to use watercolor! Then we taped the craft stick onto the back. We initially glued the stick, but our rain dances became a little too exuberant for the freshly glued stick, so I grabbed some masking tape.
This umbrella has decorations on both sides.
My baby’s umbrella decorating quickly became a little crayon eating! He was making motions like he wanted to eat the paint, but I have to draw the line somewhere. (Ok, actually, the line was drawn at the crayon- he snuck that orange one into his mouth mid-camera snap.)
This umbrella may not keep us dry, but it definitely kept us entertained. My 4 year old danced around holding the umbrella over his head singing a song, “Hey! It’s raining! I’m going to keep you dry!” It’s supposed to rain more tomorrow…not sure what we’ll come up with for that!
