Shapes and Colors Busy Bag: games for toddlers and preschoolers

Have you heard of busy bags? They are bags with an activity to engage your child (while you have some free time). They are great – you can bring them to doctor’s offices, out to lunch, give them to one child if you need to devote attention to another child. Or if you just want to finish your coffee while it’s still warm.

We’ve been working on math skills with our Shapes and Colors Busy Bag. It’s very easy to customize, using different shapes and colors. And a fun, hands-on way for kids to explore geometry!

Busy Bag for Toddlers: Shapes and Colors!

The Toddler Bag: Get 4 different colored strips of felt, and 4 clothespins. This bag has 4 clothespins, each with 4 different colored strips glued on to the tip of the clothespin. Also cut 4 larger rectangles in each of the colors.

Your toddler clips the clothespin to the rectangle of the same color. Or, if grasping the clothespin is a bit much, your toddler can place the clothespin on top of the rectangle.

The Preschooler Bag:Use 4 or more colors, and as many clothespins as you decide to include! Cut out shapes and glue them to the end of the clothespin. We started with rectangles, squares, triangles, and circles in 4 different colors.

Match the clothespin to the matching swatch. But with an added challenge: several of the same colors, and several of the same shapes. He also played by matching the colors and shapes and then creating patterns.

I found with both kids, once they did the activity in a few different ways, they came up with ways to play on their own. They stacked the clothespins, experimented to see how many felt shapes could be grasped in one clothespin.

The best thing about this bag – it’s so easy to grow with your child. Just keep adding new shapes and colors for an added to challenge!
