Playing spies is a popular activity around here these days. So secret messages for friends was a perfect fit for Valentine’s Day! We love using watercolor to find “surprise” images (or sight words!) written in crayon, so we thought we’d share that with our friends!
Making Your Secret Messages
- White paper
- White Crayons
- A Colored pencil
- Optional: heart sticker to seal the message
Use the white crayon to write out the messages. White on white is hard for early writers, so I just had my kids tell me what they wanted the messages to say. I tried to go over each letter a few times, so that it would really stand out.
Then we folded the paper, with the side that had the writing on the inside, and added a heart sticker to keep the paper closed. On the outside flap, I wrote in colored pencil “Secret Message for ____. Just add watercolor!”
Our friends will then paint the message with watercolor paints, and the paint will not stick to the waxy crayon – and the friendship message will be revealed!
You could also tuck a Valentine’s Day I Spy game into the envelope!
