One of my sons’ favorite additions to our bedtime storytime is to tell stories incorporating their favorite characters. They enjoy hearing made up adventures involving characters they love, and with the lights off and cuddled in bed, it is a good way for them to wind down.
These stories follow a basic formula: take a few favorite characters, give them a problem to solve, a minor new difficulty to solve on the way, and end with the problems resolved.
For my toddler, these stories frequently feature Thomas & Friends™. This is not surprising, because a large part of his day involves these characters: playing with the wooden trains, pushing the pull along trains, reading Thomas & Friends books, playing with stickers of his favorite characters – you name it, he loves it!
To make the stories ring true for him, I try to incorporate phrases he will recognize from Thomas – things like “useful engine” and “really reliable and right on time.”
You can let them take take the lead, either with naming the characters in the story or giving free rein to their imaginations, and letting them tell the story! However you do it, it is sure to delight your child, and become a trick in your bedtime arsenal.
