16 Fall Books Kids Will Love

Fall is here, and I wanted to share a few of our favorite books. Some of these (like Marmalade’s Yellow Leaf) were favorites from my childhood making a second appearance now with my boys.

  • Autumn Walk by Ann Burg, illustrated by Kelly Asbury: The vibrant words of this leaf-shaped board book describe fall, with its “air that is corduroy-cold,” perfectly.
  • Marmalade’s Yellow Leaf by Cindy Wheeler: The simplicity of watching a cat chase a leaf captivates small children. 
  • Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell, pictures by Lizzy Rockwell: This book captures a child’s simple joy in the yearly tradition of apple and pumpkin picking. 
  • It’s Pumpkin Time by Zoe Hall, illustrated by Shari Halpern:  a jack-o’-lantern patch tended to by a pair of siblings grows from seeds to flowers to pumpkins to Halloween decorations in this sweet story. 
  • Let It Fall by Maryann Cocca-Leffler: This book rhymes its way through may of the wonders of autumn: crisp mornings, back to school, colorful leaves blowing in the breeze, and hayrides. 
  • Who Loves The Fall? by Bob Raczka, illustrated by Judy Stead: Everyone in this book loves the fall, including hooters, howlers, loud meowers, passers, punters, pumpkin hunters. 
  • Leaves by David Ezra Stein: A little bear experiences season change, including the fall of his beloved leaves, for the first time in this charming book about the cycle of leaves. 
  • We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger, illustrated by Miki Sakamoto: Sing along to this fall-inspired version of the classic “going on a bear hunt.” 
  • When Autumn Falls by Kelli Nidey, illustrated by Susan Swan: Many things fall at this time of year, including apples for bobbing, football players, sunlight through almost bare trees. All these things and more are shown in this cut paper illustrated book. 
  • In November by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Jill Kastner: The feeling of November from the cool air and bare trees to the family celebrations and travel is captured in this book. 
  • Thanking the Moon: Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival by Grace Lin: Join in the celebration as a family attends this traditional Asian festival. The concluding pages give additional detail explaining the customs surrounding the event. 
  • Autumn Orange by Christianne C. Jones, illustrated by Todd Ouren: This book celebrates all the orange of the fall season, as seen during a fall festival.
  • Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert: Ehlert’s photocopies of actual leaves she collected join together in various combinations throughout the book as the Leaf Man journeys through fall. 
  • Autumn: An Alphabet Acrostic by Steven Schnur, illustrated by Leslie Evans: Fall staples fill this book of alphabet acrostics, including acorn, frost, leaves, pumpkin, ripe, and zero (degrees). 
  • Awesome Autumn by Bruce Goldstone: This guide to autumn is packed with colorful pictures and information appealing to kids, such as “how does autumn sound” and why “evergreens stay ever green.”
  • Autumn Leaves by Ken Robbins is a wonderful guide to leaves for all those fall nature walks.
