Guest post – Summertime in Rockville

Melissa Golladay emailed me a post idea about summertime outdoor concerts. What is more fun than sitting back and watching your little one rock out while you sip a cold drink? Or, hey, maybe you rock out, too. I actually have a video from an outdoor concert at Cape May of me dancing with my nephew and son (and a bunch of other little kids).  Am I happy that I have that tape? Yes. Every time I watch my then 2-year old son turn me around and 11-year old nephew try to dip me, it makes me smile. Would I have been dancing if I knew I was being videotaped? Probably not. (But, hey, “You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching,” right?)

Melissa is going to share a post about free outdoor concerts in Rockville, MD. I’d encourage everyone to search for free outdoor concerts near them (I promise you won’t all get taped dancing!).

Concerts around the Smithsonian museums in DC can be found here and this site has a post about summertime concerts all over the DC metro area.

Summertime in Rockville
I love summer. I honestly don’t understand people who prefer those cold winter months over summer. Yes, DC is hot and humid, but the city becomes alive with museum events, outdoor festivals, movies on the green, and my favorite – free outdoor concerts.
We live outside the city, actually, in Rockville MD. We love this community and all of the wonderful things the town provides. The town center is a short walk from our house and from June to September there is some kind of free event 4-5 days a week! At least two nights a week, we can enjoy a free outdoor concert which is perfect for us because our little S loves to dance. Here’s a photo of her just boppin away in front of the band.

She’s dancing solo in this photo, but most events are crawling with kids and their families. S gets so excited that she can’t stop giggling. And Greg and I get to chill with some good music (and maybe a cold drink) as a bonus! Make sure to check out the website for the full list of events. (And any vendor in the square will validate 2 hours of free parking!)
When there aren’t events, they have a fountain that kids can run through. I’m honestly not sure what S likes more – the live music or the fountains. But either way, we can always find a great, free activity in a family-friendly location within walking distance of our house. You really can’t beat that.
I hope everyone else’s summer is equally awesome!
