Bagel Chips

We celebrated my little guy’s first birthday with a big brunch. I went a little overboard on bagel buying, resulting in many leftover bagels. This gave me the chance to make some bagel chips, with the assistance of my two little helpers.

I tried out 2 recipes: garlic salt and cinnamon sugar. I wanted to involve the boys, so we mixed everything in a resealable bag- you could also use a bowl.

Kids can do the majority of this recipe – the measuring, shaking the bags to combine the ingredients, and laying the coated bagel chips out on the baking sheet. Using the bag to mix makes it easy for even babies (or just-turned 1 year olds!) to get in on the fun.

Making Bagel Chips

My method for making bagel chips is below. However, I would use this only as a rough guideline. How you make the chips depends on how many bagels you’re working with, and how strong you want the flavor to be. Basically, you want to coat the bagel slices with something to make the flavor stick (I used olive oil or butter) and something for flavor (I used garlic salt and cinnamon sugar).

Garlic Salt Bagel Chips

1 clove garlic
2 1/4 tsp salt
1/3 c olive oil
4 mini bagels (about 2 regular size)

Preheat oven to 335 degrees. Have an adult slice the bagels into round disks and mince 1 clove of garlic. Add bagel slices, salt, oil, and garlic to a ziplock bag, seal it, and shake until the bagel slices are evenly coated with oil, garlic, and salt.

Line a cookie baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay out bagel chips in a single layer, and have an adult place the sheet in the oven for 20 minutes , or until bagel pieces are golden brown.

Note: my original plan was to add chopped thyme, basil, and grated Parmesan cheese to this recipe, but the boys were so anxious to get to their part that I went for something quicker. I still think they would be a delicious addition, though!

Cinnamon Sugar Bagel Chips

3 mini bagels. (about 1 1/2 regular size)
4 tbl melted butter, cooled
2 tbl sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 335 degrees. Have an adult slice the bagels into mini discs, and melt butter and allow to cool until comfortable to touch. Mix cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl. Combine bagel slices, butter, and cinnamon sugar into a ziplock bag. Seal bag and shake to combine.

Line a cookie baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay out bagel chips in a single layer, and have an adult place the sheet in the oven for 20 minutes , or until bagel pieces are golden brown.

Note: this recipe leads to a strong cinnamon flavor. If that isn’t your thing, cut back on the amount of cinnamon used.
