Watermelon Sun Tea: Math In The Kitchen

watermelon ice tea recipe

My 4 year old came home from preschool excited about the watermelon-flavored lemonade they mixed.  It sounded so refreshing that we decided to create our own watermelon inspired summer drink. Creating a recipe together used math and fine motor skills – and was a whole lot of fun!

We decided to make watermelon sun tea. I adore sun tea. When I think of my childhood summers, they are always flavored with my grandmother’s sun tea.

Ingredients for watermelon ice tea:

-A handful of mint from the garden
-10 tea bags
-pitcher full of water
-1/2 mini watermelon
-1 lime

To fill up the pitcher, I initially got out the 4 cup glass measure, filled with water. My son started cracking up, and I couldn’t figure out why until he said, “It’s too heavy , Mama, I can’t lift it!”  Oops.

Focus on Measurements

As I helped him pour the water into a more manageable 2 cup measure. As we poured, he watched to see when we reached the 2 cup mark.

Using a 2 cup measure worked better, and he filled the pitcher with 10 cups of water. We have washable window crayons and he  used them to mark off each cup. That way he got in some practice writing and counting.

He then counted out 10 teabags and threw them into the sun tea, along with the mint.
We then put the pitcher in the sun and let it sit for about 2 1/2 hours, until it looked fully brewed.

Becomes…

While the tea was brewing, I sliced up a mini watermelon, and puréed it in the food processor.

We then measured out 8 cups of tea and 2 cups of watermelon puree. We squeezed the juice out of 1 lime, and stirred everything together.

And then we went back into the sunshine and enjoyed a refreshing glass of watermelon sun tea!
